Besides the wellness services and good Hungarian food and wine there are many attractions in the close vicinity of Erzsébet Park Hotel***. We tell you here a little bit about the Sirok Castle, Hungary's only so called cave fortress.
Sirok is 12 kilometers from our hotel, where the Tarna creek becomes wider. The fortress – only one km from the village of Sirok – was built on top of the 296-meter high castle hill after the Mongolian invasion, to check and control the northern roads. Under the citadel you can still see the dungeon, which played an important role in the battles against the Turks and later against the Habsburgs. The fortress was inhabited till the middle of 19th century, since then the outer part was almost completely destroyed. You can see some really interesting 6-8 meter tall rock formations only a few minutes walk from the castle.
